Cedar Shingles Installation

Things you will need for the Cedar shingles installation will be: Chalk box, Hammer, 6-D galvanized nails, Measuring tape, Shake ridges, 10 inch cedar wood shingles or shakes, Skill saw, 18 inch cedar shakes

  • Remove existing siding to provide a flat and even surface.
  • Using the chalk line marker, snap the first row chalk line along the bottom of the wall
  • Use a level to ensure the chalk line is straight
  • Continue this process across all of the walls you are covering with the cedar shake siding
  • Snap the next chalk lines parallel to the first the distance you desire
  • Note that each row of shakes overlaps the one before
  • Use to cover up the nails as well.
  • Keep this in mind when snapping the lines
  • Start at the bottom and lay in a row of wood shingles
  • Make sure that they are at least 10 inches in length along the chalk line
  • Have the bottom of the shingles hitting the chalk line equally
  • Nail two nails at the top spaced equally apart.
  • Be careful when nailing as extremely dry cedar shakes tend to split if over nailed.
  • Ensure the first course is straight.
